Can we better detect suffering in unresponsive cancer patients?
NCT ID NCT05837039
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at how healthcare providers and caregivers perceive discomfort in advanced cancer patients who have hypoactive delirium, a state where patients are unresponsive and withdrawn. Researchers will ask both groups to fill out questionnaires about the patient's discomfort levels. The goal is to see if there are differences in perception, which could help improve communication and care for patients at the end of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help healthcare teams better understand and address discomfort in patients with hypoactive delirium, potentially improving end-of-life care.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study with only 100 participants, so findings may not apply to all patients. It measures perceptions, not direct patient outcomes, and may not lead to immediate changes in care.
