Brain scans reveal why DBS may cause thinking problems in Parkinson's

NCT ID NCT06960096

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at why deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson's disease can sometimes cause thinking problems. Researchers will scan the brains of 55 people with DBS implants while their device is on or off. The goal is to understand how stimulation affects brain networks, which could help doctors reduce side effects in the future.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

deep brain stimulation (DBS) combined with fMRI scanning

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors choose better stimulation targets and reduce thinking problems after DBS surgery for Parkinson's.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study with only 55 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It is not testing a new treatment, only understanding brain changes.
