Cord injection may curb deadly Post-Birth bleeding
NCT ID NCT07436286
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether giving an extra dose of oxytocin directly into the umbilical vein, along with standard care, could reduce blood loss after childbirth. Over 400 women having a vaginal delivery took part. The goal was to see if this simple, low-cost method could help prevent postpartum hemorrhage, a leading cause of maternal death.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
oxytocin
What this could lead to
If effective, this simple addition to standard care could reduce dangerous bleeding after childbirth, especially in low-resource settings.
What could go wrong
This is a single completed study with 416 participants. Results may not apply to all settings, and the intervention adds a step to standard care that may not always be feasible.
