Tiny incision, big relief? study tests Ultrasound-Guided carpal tunnel release
NCT ID NCT04504019
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compared two types of carpal tunnel release surgery: one using ultrasound guidance with a tiny incision (less than 1 cm) and the traditional mini-open method with a slightly larger cut. Forty-one adults with carpal tunnel syndrome were randomly assigned to one of the two procedures. Researchers tracked symptoms, hand strength, pain, and recovery time over 24 months to see if the ultrasound-guided approach works just as well and allows a quicker return to daily activities.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
SX-One MicroKnife (UltraGuideCTR) for ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release is as effective as traditional surgery, with a smaller incision and possibly faster recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-site trial with only 41 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The ultrasound-guided technique is still relatively new, and long-term outcomes beyond 24 months are not studied.
