Simple ultrasound could prevent rare anesthesia deaths in kids
NCT ID NCT06079268
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 30 times
Summary
This study tested whether a simple, non-invasive stomach ultrasound can accurately detect dangerous fluid levels in children before anesthesia. 92 healthy children aged 1-10 drank different amounts of clear liquid, then had their stomachs scanned. The goal was to see if the ultrasound could reliably identify those with a fluid volume high enough to pose a risk of aspiration (vomiting into the lungs), a rare but serious complication. The results will help doctors decide who can safely undergo anesthesia.
