New ultrasound biopsy could replace risky lung surgery for scarred lungs

NCT ID NCT07305220

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether an ultrasound-guided needle biopsy is a safe way to diagnose interstitial lung disease (ILD), a group of conditions that scar the lungs. Fifteen adults who need a tissue sample will first get the ultrasound-guided biopsy under local anesthesia, then have the standard surgical biopsy. Researchers will track serious complications like collapsed lung or bleeding to see if the less invasive method is safe enough to use routinely.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
ultrasound-guided lung biopsy
What this could lead to
If this procedure proves safe, it could offer a less risky, outpatient alternative to surgical lung biopsy for diagnosing interstitial lung disease.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early feasibility study with only 15 people. The procedure may still cause complications like collapsed lung or bleeding, and results may not apply to all patients.
