Heart hole repair without radiation: new study could change standard care
NCT ID NCT07054541
First seen Mar 29, 2026 · Last updated May 08, 2026 · Updated 4 times
Summary
This study compares a new ultrasound-guided method to close a common heart hole (atrial septal defect) with the traditional X-ray-guided approach. The goal is to see if the ultrasound method works just as well while avoiding radiation and contrast dye, which can cause long-term cancer risk or kidney problems. About 666 participants aged 2 and older will be randomly assigned to one of the two methods, and a separate group of people who cannot have X-rays will also be studied.
