Throat cancer diagnosis could get faster and more accurate with new ultrasound technique
NCT ID NCT07548268
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether adding a special ultrasound of the tonsils to standard exams helps doctors diagnose oropharyngeal cancer more accurately. About 180 patients with suspected throat cancer will be randomly assigned to either standard diagnostics alone or standard diagnostics plus the ultrasound. Researchers will compare how often the correct diagnosis is made, how many biopsies are successful, and how quickly the diagnosis is reached.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- transoral and cervical ultrasound
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could make diagnosing oropharyngeal cancer faster and more accurate, reducing the need for extra scans and repeat biopsies.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small, early-stage study. The ultrasound technique may not prove consistently better than current methods, and results may not apply to all hospitals.
