Can a simple ultrasound predict breathing machine success in ICU pneumonia patients?
NCT ID NCT07405567
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will use bedside ultrasound to look at the diaphragm and other breathing muscles in 150 ICU patients with pneumonia who are on a breathing machine. The goal is to see if muscle measurements can help predict whether a patient will successfully come off the machine or fail. No new treatment is being tested; researchers are just observing and collecting data to better understand weaning difficulties.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this study could help doctors identify which ICU patients with pneumonia are at risk of failing to come off a breathing machine, potentially leading to better monitoring and earlier interventions.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early observational study at a single center, not a treatment trial. The findings may not apply to all patients or change current care practices.
