Bile acid boosts liver regrowth in donors?

NCT ID NCT06091787

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether taking ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) pills for 10 days after partial liver donation helps the remaining liver regrow faster. 90 living liver donors were randomly assigned to receive UDCA or standard care. The researchers measured liver volume and function at 7 and 14 days after surgery to see if UDCA made a difference.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost way to speed up liver regrowth after partial liver removal, helping donors recover faster.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 90 participants. The drug may not significantly improve liver regeneration, and results may not apply to all patients.
