Can a common bleeding drug help trauma patients on blood thinners?

NCT ID NCT07116395

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 4 trial will test whether tranexamic acid (TXA), a drug that reduces bleeding, can safely lower blood loss in 200 orthopedic trauma patients who are on anticoagulants (blood thinners). Participants will have surgery for broken leg or thigh bones. The study compares those who get TXA to those who don't, looking at blood loss and hospital stay length. It aims to fill a gap in knowledge about using TXA in this higher-risk group.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

tranexamic acid (TXA)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that TXA safely reduces blood loss and transfusions in trauma patients who are on blood thinners.

What could go wrong

This is a single-center study with 200 patients, so results may not apply broadly. TXA could still raise clot risk in this specific group.
