Ancient gua sha technique tested for depression relief

NCT ID NCT07449676

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether Tui Jing therapy, a deeper form of Gua Sha from traditional Chinese medicine, can help ease depression symptoms. Researchers will compare real therapy to a sham ultrasound in 64 adults with depression. They will measure mood, sleep, heart rate, and brain activity over one month.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Tui Jing therapy (a form of Gua Sha with meridian pressure)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a non-drug, hands-on therapy to help ease depression symptoms and improve sleep.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 64 people. The sham control may not fully blind participants, and results may not apply to everyone with depression.
