New questionnaire could stop dentists from mistaking nerve pain for toothache
NCT ID NCT07453511
First seen Mar 10, 2026
Summary
Trigeminal neuralgia causes sudden, severe electric-shock-like pain in the face, often mistaken for a tooth problem. This observational study tests a 15-item questionnaire (IDTN) to see if it can accurately identify possible trigeminal neuralgia in patients visiting dental clinics. 250 adults with facial or oral pain will fill out the questionnaire before their specialist appointment, and their answers will be compared to the final diagnosis. If the questionnaire works well, it could help dentists and doctors recognize the condition earlier and avoid unnecessary dental procedures.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this questionnaire could help dentists and doctors quickly identify trigeminal neuralgia, leading to faster referrals and fewer unnecessary dental treatments.
What could go wrong
This is an early observational study, not a treatment trial. The questionnaire may not be accurate enough in real-world settings, and results may not apply to all patients.
