First seen Feb 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study tests whether using a tourniquet (a tight band) around the lower uterus during surgery for placenta accreta can improve newborn Apgar scores. Placenta accreta is a condition where the placenta doesn't detach after birth, causing severe bleeding. The trial will involve 100 pregnant women with this condition. The goal is to see if this simple technique leads to healthier babies and fewer complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Foley catheter used as a tourniquet around the lower uterus

What this could lead to

If successful, this simple technique could reduce newborn complications and help preserve the mother's uterus during high-risk deliveries.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial (100 participants) focused on a specific outcome (Apgar score). The tourniquet may not improve outcomes and could carry risks like reduced blood flow to the baby.
