Summary

This study tests whether applying menthol solution to the cheek can release vapors that stimulate cold sensors on the eye, triggering natural tear production. Thirty healthy adults will receive either menthol or a placebo on one cheek, and researchers will measure if tears overflow within five minutes. If successful, this could lead to a new way to manage dry eyes without eye drops.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

menthol solution

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to stimulate natural tears and reduce reliance on eye drops for dry eyes.

What could go wrong

This is a small early-phase trial in healthy people, not those with dry eyes. The effect may be weak or not work at all, and menthol may cause irritation.
