Less invasive tonsil surgery may be as effective as full removal for sleep apnea
NCT ID NCT07580170
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two types of tonsil surgery for adults with obstructive sleep apnea and enlarged tonsils. One surgery removes the tonsils completely, while the other removes only part of them. The goal is to see if the less invasive approach works just as well at improving breathing during sleep. About 132 adults will take part, and their sleep will be monitored for up to 5 years after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- tonsil surgery (tonsillotomy or tonsillectomy)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that a less invasive tonsil surgery works just as well as full removal for treating sleep apnea, with potentially fewer side effects.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small trial (132 people) and has not started recruiting yet. The less invasive surgery may not be as effective in the long term, and individual results can vary.
