Can 'Peacekeeper' cells stop diabetes in its tracks?

NCT ID NCT05207995

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-phase study tested whether a new type of immune cell, called a tolerogenic dendritic cell, is safe for people with type 1 diabetes. The cells were made from each patient's own blood and designed to calm the immune system attack on the pancreas. 32 participants received the cells or standard care, and researchers monitored blood sugar, insulin markers, and side effects.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

tolerogenic dendritic cells (immune cells trained to calm the immune system)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could point toward a way to preserve insulin production in type 1 diabetes without lifelong immune suppression.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase safety study with only 32 participants. It is not designed to prove effectiveness, and the treatment may not work or may have side effects.
