Magnetic pulses may reignite motivation in memory-loss veterans

NCT ID NCT03590327

First seen Dec 26, 2025 · Last updated Jun 14, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study tested whether transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can reduce apathy—a severe lack of motivation—in older veterans with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). About 103 participants received either real or fake TMS over 20 sessions. The goal was to see if TMS could improve motivation, memory, and daily function, and to identify who responds best using genetic and biomarker tests. The study also explored how the COVID-19 pandemic affected these veterans and their caregivers.
