New radiation approach aims to make stem cell transplants safer for kids
NCT ID NCT06075563
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study compares a new radiation technique called total lymphoid irradiation (TLI) to the standard total body irradiation (TBI) for children aged 0-18 who need a stem cell transplant from a half-matched donor. The goal is to see if TLI reduces complications like graft-versus-host disease and graft failure while still controlling the underlying disease. About 23 children will be enrolled, and researchers will track their health for up to one year after the transplant.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Total lymphoid irradiation (radiation therapy)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a safer conditioning option for children needing stem cell transplants, potentially reducing serious side effects like graft-versus-host disease.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 23 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The new radiation method might not work as well as the standard one, and risks like infection or graft failure remain.
