Liver shunt study hopes to turn back the clock on cirrhosis

NCT ID NCT07172035

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 08, 2026 · Updated 31 times

Summary

This study tests whether a procedure called TIPS (a small tube placed in the liver to reroute blood flow) can help people with advanced liver disease (decompensated cirrhosis) achieve 'recompensation'—meaning the liver partially recovers and complications like fluid buildup or bleeding stop. Researchers will follow 250 adults for one year after TIPS to see how many meet recovery criteria and what factors help. The goal is to improve survival and reduce the need for a liver transplant.
