Timing of extra nutrition could save lives in ICU
NCT ID NCT07085455
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether starting extra nutrition through an IV earlier (on day 4) versus later (on day 8) helps critically ill patients survive. About 946 adults with organ failure who cannot get enough nutrition from a feeding tube will be randomly assigned to one of the two timing groups. The main goal is to see if early IV nutrition lowers the chance of death within 28 days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
supplemental parenteral nutrition (IV nutrition)
What this could lead to
If early IV nutrition works, it could reduce deaths and improve recovery in critically ill patients who cannot get enough nutrition through a feeding tube.
What could go wrong
This is a mid-stage trial, so results may not be definitive. Early IV nutrition might cause side effects like infections or liver problems, and the benefit may be small or absent.
