Heart bypass patients: how long should you take blood thinners?
NCT ID NCT06981390
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study looks at how long people should take a combination of two blood thinners (ticagrelor and aspirin) after coronary artery bypass surgery to keep the new vein grafts open. 300 patients will be randomly assigned to take the combination for 3, 6, or 12 months, then switch to aspirin alone. The goal is to find the best balance between keeping grafts open and avoiding bleeding problems.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ticagrelor and Aspirin
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could identify the ideal length of time to take ticagrelor plus aspirin after bypass surgery to keep new blood vessels open and reduce heart complications.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (300 people) comparing different treatment durations, so results may not apply to all patients. Bleeding is a known risk with these medications.
