Brain zaps aim to unfreeze gait in new trial

NCT ID NCT05192759

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a type of brain stimulation called theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (TBS) can help people who experience freezing of gait—a sudden inability to start or continue walking. Forty participants will receive TBS while researchers measure how quickly and smoothly they can turn and walk. The goal is to see if this non-invasive treatment can improve movement and understand how it affects the brain.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a non-invasive brain stimulation treatment to reduce freezing episodes and improve mobility in people with gait problems.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply widely. The treatment is experimental and may not produce meaningful or lasting improvements.
