Texts and prizes could boost HIV med adherence
NCT ID NCT06949774
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether daily text reminders and small prize incentives can help people with HIV take their medication on time every day. Researchers will enroll 550 adults in Uganda who recently started HIV treatment. Participants will receive text messages linking pill-taking to their daily routine, and some will be eligible for monthly prizes if they stay on track. The goal is to find a simple, cost-effective way to improve long-term medication habits and prevent drug resistance.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
daily text messages and prize-based incentives
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could offer a low-cost, scalable way to help people with HIV and other chronic diseases stay on their medication long-term.
What could go wrong
This is a behavioral study, not a drug trial, so results depend on personal habits and may not work for everyone. The prize incentives are small and may not be enough to change behavior for all participants.
