Texting to beat leukemia: study tests if phone reminders boost chemo adherence
NCT ID NCT06446661
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether daily or weekly text message reminders help adolescents and young adults (ages 15-39) with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) take their oral chemotherapy medications (mercaptopurine and methotrexate) more consistently during maintenance therapy. Participants are split into three groups: high intensity (daily texts), low intensity (weekly texts), or standard care (no texts). The goal is to see if reminders improve adherence and to understand how patient factors like self-efficacy relate to taking medication on schedule.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
text message reminders
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that simple text reminders improve how consistently patients take their oral chemotherapy, potentially leading to better treatment outcomes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 38 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Text reminders may not significantly change adherence, and the study does not test long-term effects.
