Could a dab of antibiotic in the tooth socket dull post-extraction pain?
NCT ID NCT07738861
First seen Jul 31, 2026 ยท Last updated Jul 31, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether placing tetracycline directly into the tooth socket after removing a lower molar can reduce post-operative pain. About 74 adults needing a molar extraction will be randomly assigned to receive either the antibiotic or no extra treatment. Pain levels will be measured at 24 hours, 48 hours, and 7 days after surgery, along with how many painkillers each person needs.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Tetracycline (250 mg) mixed with sterile saline, placed directly into the extraction socket after mandibular molar removal
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this simple, low-cost approach could become a standard way to ease pain and speed recovery after molar extractions.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial, and the benefit may be modest. Tetracycline is an antibiotic, so there is a small risk of allergic reaction or local irritation.
