Could a tonic water ingredient help spot dangerous leaks in ICU patients?

NCT ID NCT02598713

Summary

This study aimed to test if quinine, a safe compound found in tonic water, could be used as a marker to detect leaks around breathing tubes in critically ill patients on ventilators. The goal was to find a better way to spot when fluids from the mouth leak past the tube's seal into the lungs, which can lead to pneumonia. The study was withdrawn before any patients were enrolled.
