Could a common antifungal drug slow prostate Cancer's return?
NCT ID NCT07365423
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This phase II trial is testing whether terbinafine, a widely used antifungal pill, can slow the rise of PSA in men whose prostate cancer has returned after initial treatment. The goal is to see if this well-tolerated drug can delay or replace standard hormone therapy, which often causes significant side effects. The study will enroll 42 men with biochemical recurrence and no visible tumors on scans.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Terbinafine (an antifungal drug)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a well-tolerated, oral option to delay or avoid hormone therapy in men with early prostate cancer recurrence.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial (42 participants) testing a repurposed drug. The anti-cancer effect is not proven, and the primary endpoint is only a PSA marker, not survival or cure.
