Tennis therapy: a new way to boost confidence in early psychosis?
NCT ID NCT07633899
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study tested whether combining tennis with a self-esteem program could improve well-being, thinking skills, and daily life for 32 young people (ages 18–30) with early psychosis or at-risk mental states. Participants took part in eight tennis sessions plus a self-esteem group. The study measured changes in mood, memory, attention, and social function. Because it was small and had no comparison group, the results are preliminary and need larger studies to confirm.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, enjoyable way to boost confidence and daily functioning in early psychosis.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study (32 people) with no control group, so results may not be reliable or generalizable. The intervention is short-term, and any benefits might not last.
