Ventilator breakthrough? new marker could prevent lung harm in ICU

NCT ID NCT06921655

First seen Feb 03, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a simple measurement called the Pressure-Muscle Index (PMI) can help doctors avoid giving too much breathing support from ventilators. Too much support can weaken the diaphragm and damage the lungs. The trial involves 36 ICU patients with acute breathing failure who are already on a ventilator. Researchers will adjust the ventilator settings and track how the patient's breathing changes to find the best level of support.
