New study checks how well an antibiotic reaches the brain

NCT ID NCT06119061

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at how much of the antibiotic telavancin gets into the brain fluid of 20 critically ill patients who have a drain in their head (external ventricular drain). These patients often need strong antibiotics, but it's not clear if telavancin reaches the brain well enough. Researchers will measure drug levels in blood and brain fluid after three doses to better understand how the body processes the drug.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Telavancin (Vibativ)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help doctors know the right dose of telavancin to treat brain infections in critically ill patients.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-phase study (20 people) that only measures drug levels, not whether the drug actually works or improves outcomes. Results may not apply to all patients.
