Ear stimulation shows promise for rewiring Stroke-Damaged brains

NCT ID NCT07282106

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This completed study tested whether mild electrical stimulation of the outer ear (taVNS) can change how brain regions communicate in people who had a stroke more than 6 months ago, as well as in healthy adults. Researchers used a brain-imaging technique called fNIRS to measure resting-state connectivity. The study included 84 participants and compared real stimulation to a sham (placebo) condition to see if taVNS has a specific effect on brain networks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation (taVNS) - mild electrical pulses to the outer ear

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a non-invasive way to help rewire brain networks after stroke.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study focused on brain imaging, not on improving symptoms or function. Results may not translate to real-world benefits.
