Scientists harvest stem cells from tongues in search for diabetes cure

NCT ID NCT03366168

Summary

This early-stage study aims to see if stem cells can be taken from tiny taste buds on the tongue, grown in a lab, and turned into cells that produce insulin. Researchers will enroll 250 healthy adults to collect small tongue tissue samples and study how these cells change with age. The goal is to gather knowledge that could one day lead to new cell-based treatments for diabetes, but this study itself does not provide treatment.
