Shock therapy for arms: nerve zaps may help spinal injury patients move again

NCT ID NCT04288245

First seen Feb 01, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study tests a new approach called targeted plasticity therapy for people with spinal cord injuries who have arm weakness. It uses mild electrical pulses on the vagus nerve in the neck during rehab exercises to help the brain and spinal cord rewire. Twenty adults aged 18-64 with a first-time cervical spinal cord injury will take part in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to check safety and see if it improves arm function.
