New disc implant could replace neck fusion surgery
NCT ID NCT04469231
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares a new artificial disc, the Synergy Disc, to standard spinal fusion surgery for people with one-level cervical degenerative disc disease that hasn't improved with other treatments. About 175 adults aged 18-70 with neck and arm pain or nerve symptoms are being followed for at least 2 years. The goal is to see if the disc is as safe and effective as fusion, with less pain and better movement.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Synergy Disc (artificial disc replacement device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a motion-preserving alternative to spinal fusion for patients with cervical disc disease, potentially reducing long-term complications.
What could go wrong
This is a non-randomized, historically controlled trial with 175 participants, so results may be less reliable than a randomized study. The device could fail or cause complications requiring additional surgery.
