New artificial disc could replace fusion for neck pain
NCT ID NCT02667067
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a new artificial disc called Simplify® for people with severe neck and arm pain from cervical degenerative disc disease. The trial involved 150 adults who received the disc and were compared to a historical group that had spinal fusion surgery. The goal was to see if the artificial disc is as safe and effective as fusion, while allowing more natural neck movement.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Simplify® cervical artificial disc (a medical device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this artificial disc could offer a motion-preserving alternative to spinal fusion for people with severe neck and arm pain.
What could go wrong
This is a completed trial comparing a device to an older surgery. Results may not apply to all patients, and device-related risks like failure or need for additional surgery remain.
