Can an enzyme shield the gut during transplant recovery?
NCT ID NCT04692181
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests an oral enzyme called SYN-004 in adults who have received a stem cell transplant and need intravenous antibiotics for fever. The enzyme is designed to break down antibiotics in the gut, protecting the natural bacteria there. Researchers will check safety, whether the enzyme enters the blood, and if it helps prevent infections and improve outcomes. The trial involves 36 participants and is in early phases (1b/2a).
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
SYN-004 (Ribaxamase), an oral enzyme that breaks down certain antibiotics in the gut
What this could lead to
If it works, SYN-004 could help protect the gut microbiome during antibiotic treatment, potentially reducing infections and improving recovery in stem cell transplant patients.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase trial with only 36 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The drug might not effectively protect the microbiome or could interfere with antibiotic levels in the blood.
