Can a simple sweep kickstart labor? new trial investigates
NCT ID NCT07043088
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether performing membrane sweeping several times near the due date helps women go into labor on their own before 41 weeks and 3 days. About 1,500 pregnant women with a single baby in head-down position will be randomly assigned to receive either no sweeping or up to three sweeps a few days apart. Researchers will track who goes into labor spontaneously and how they feel about the procedure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- membrane sweeping (a procedure where a clinician sweeps a finger around the cervix to separate the membranes from the uterus)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could give doctors a simple, drug-free way to help more women go into labor on their own before needing medical induction.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small, early-stage trial. The procedure may not work, could cause discomfort or minor bleeding, and results may not apply to all pregnant women.
