New program aims to boost HIV prevention in ugandan teens with education, peer support, and savings accounts

NCT ID NCT07002866

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study enrolls 600 adolescent girls and young women (ages 15-24) at high risk of HIV in Uganda. Participants are randomly assigned to one of three groups: HIV risk reduction sessions alone, sessions plus peer support, or sessions plus peer support and a matched savings account. The goal is to see which combination best helps them start and consistently take PrEP, a daily pill that prevents HIV. The program runs for 20 months, with follow-up over three years.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

behavioral intervention (HIV risk reduction sessions, peer support, and matched savings accounts)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a practical, community-based model to significantly reduce new HIV infections among young women in high-risk areas.

What could go wrong

This is a behavioral study, not a drug trial, so results depend on participation and follow-up. It may not work in other settings or for all individuals.
