Smoothing rough implants may help fight gum infection
NCT ID NCT04052373
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests whether smoothing the rough surface of dental implants (implantoplasty) during surgery helps treat peri-implantitis, a gum infection around implants. Thirty-five adults with at least two affected implants will receive standard cleaning alone on one implant and cleaning plus implantoplasty on the other. The main goal is to see if implantoplasty reduces bleeding on probing, a sign of inflammation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Implantoplasty (smoothing of rough implant surface) and open flap debridement
What this could lead to
If implantoplasty proves better, it could become a standard part of surgical treatment for peri-implantitis, helping patients maintain oral hygiene and control infection.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 35 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The procedure involves surgery and carries risks like infection or implant damage.
