New 3D-Printed guide may speed up stuck tooth surgery

NCT ID NCT05909254

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a custom 3D-printed surgical guide helps dentists expose impacted canine teeth more quickly and accurately than the traditional free-hand method. Forty teenagers aged 11-18 with one or both upper canine teeth stuck in the palate will be randomly assigned to either the guided or conventional surgery. The main goals are to see if the guide makes the surgery shorter and if it still allows the tooth to be moved into its correct position.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could make a common dental surgery faster and more predictable for teenagers with impacted canine teeth.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The guide also adds extra cost and planning time.
