Surgery may replace chemo for some testicular cancer patients

NCT ID NCT02537548

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a surgery called retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) can be used as the first treatment for men with early-stage testicular seminoma that has spread to lymph nodes in the abdomen. The goal is to see if this surgery can control the cancer while causing fewer long-term side effects than standard treatments like chemotherapy or radiation. About 55 men with small lymph nodes (1-3 cm) are being enrolled to track how many stay cancer-free after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) surgery
What this could lead to
If successful, this surgery could become a first-line treatment option for early-stage testicular seminoma, reducing the risk of long-term side effects like second cancers and heart disease.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 55 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The surgery itself carries risks like bleeding, infection, and nerve damage, and some patients may still experience cancer recurrence.
