Neck surgery pain relief: could a simple injection replace opioids?
NCT ID NCT06755736
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tested whether a superficial cervical block—a local anesthetic injection in the neck—can reduce the need for opioid painkillers after anterior cervical discectomy surgery. Sixty adults scheduled for this neck surgery were randomly assigned to receive either the block or standard care. Researchers measured how much rescue opioid (tramadol) patients needed and compared pain scores. The goal is to find a safer, effective pain control method that avoids opioid side effects like nausea and breathing problems.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
superficial cervical plexus block (local anesthetic injection)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a safer way to manage pain after neck surgery, reducing reliance on opioids and their side effects.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 60 patients. The block may not significantly reduce opioid use or pain scores, and results may not apply to all patients.
