First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a daily supplement of sulforaphane, a compound found in broccoli sprouts, can improve negative symptoms (like lack of motivation) and thinking problems in people with schizophrenia. Sixty participants aged 12 to 45 who are stable on antipsychotic medication will receive either sulforaphane or a placebo for 12 weeks, followed by an optional 12-week open-label phase. The study will measure changes in symptom scales and brain imaging.

Active substance

sulforaphane (a compound found in broccoli sprouts)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new way to help with hard-to-treat symptoms like lack of motivation and trouble thinking clearly in schizophrenia.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 people. The supplement may not work better than a placebo, and results may not apply to everyone with schizophrenia.
