New stroke drug could boost recovery when given hours after symptoms

NCT ID NCT07389460

First seen Feb 05, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This phase 3 trial tests whether giving a clot-busting drug called rhPro-UK before a mechanical clot removal procedure improves recovery for people with severe stroke. About 820 participants who had a stroke 4.5 to 24 hours earlier will receive either the drug or a placebo, followed by the standard clot removal. The main goal is to see if more people can live independently 90 days later.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

recombinant human prourokinase (rhPro-UK)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new treatment to improve recovery for stroke patients who can't get clot-busting drugs right away.

What could go wrong

This is still being tested, so it may not work better than placebo. There is also a risk of bleeding in the brain, which could be serious.

Conditions
