Dancers pump iron: study tests if lifting weights improves dance moves

NCT ID NCT07164599

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether a 12-week strength and power training program could improve movement patterns, physical fitness, and leg strength in Chinese college dancesport athletes. Thirty healthy female dancers were split into two groups: one did strength training three times a week plus their regular dance practice, while the other only did dance practice. Researchers measured balance, movement quality, strength, and dance performance at several points during and after training.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

strength training program

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that adding strength training to dance practice improves performance and reduces injury risk.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early study with only 30 healthy volunteers, so results may not apply to all dancers. The training is extra work and could cause muscle soreness or injury.
