Pumping iron against cancer: exercise may ease treatment side effects

NCT ID NCT07453173

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a supervised strength-training program is safe and practical for people with locally advanced rectal cancer who are receiving chemotherapy and radiation before surgery. Fifteen participants will do personalized resistance exercises twice a week for about 24 weeks. The main goal is to see if patients can stick with the program and if it causes any problems, while also exploring whether it helps maintain muscle, reduce fatigue, and improve quality of life.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

supervised progressive resistance training program

What this could lead to

If this program is feasible and safe, it could lead to a larger trial testing whether strength training helps patients maintain muscle, reduce fatigue, and improve quality of life during cancer treatment.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study (15 people) with no control group, so results may not apply widely. Exercise during intensive cancer therapy could also cause injury or be too demanding for some patients.
