Leukemia treatment break: study tests pausing chemo for AML patients
NCT ID NCT06511882
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether people with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who have been on a combination of azacitidine or decitabine plus venetoclax for a year can stop treatment if tests show no remaining cancer cells. Researchers want to see if these patients can stay in remission without the leukemia returning. The trial will enroll 37 adults whose AML is in remission with no detectable disease.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
azacitidine or decitabine combined with venetoclax
What this could lead to
If successful, this could allow some AML patients to take a break from chemotherapy without their cancer coming back, improving quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is a small early-phase study with only 37 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. There is a risk that the leukemia could return after stopping treatment.
