Zapping cancer spots could delay stronger drugs

NCT ID NCT04299646

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether high-dose, precise radiation (stereotactic radiotherapy) can control a few growing kidney cancer spots while the rest of the disease is stable on current medication. About 77 people with metastatic kidney cancer whose tumors are progressing in only a few places will receive radiation to those spots. The goal is to see if this can delay the need to switch to a new, often stronger, systemic therapy.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
stereotactic radiotherapy
What this could lead to
If it works, this approach could help people with kidney cancer stay on their current treatment longer and delay switching to harsher drugs.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 77 participants. It may not prove effective, and radiation can cause side effects like fatigue or local tissue damage.
