Tiny stent may prevent pancreatitis after gallstone surgery
NCT ID NCT07495111
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether placing a small plastic tube (stent) in the pancreas during a gallstone removal procedure can prevent pancreatitis, a painful inflammation. 88 adults with both gallbladder and common bile duct stones will be randomly assigned to receive either standard care (anti-inflammatory medication) or the medication plus the stent. The main goal is to see if the stent reduces the number of people who develop pancreatitis after the procedure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- prophylactic pancreatic stent
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could provide a simple way to prevent a common complication (pancreatitis) after gallstone removal, making the procedure safer.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial (88 people) comparing two approaches, so results may not apply to everyone. Stent placement itself carries a small risk of injury or infection.
